Memorial Services

Similar to a Funeral Service in many ways, except with a Funeral Service the body is present in an open or closed casket, whereas with a Memorial Service the body is not present and a Framed Portrait or Cremation Urn can be placed at the front of the room as a focal point.

A Memorial Service provides family and friends a place and time to acknowledge the reality of the passing and is a great time to start the healing process.

The following actions should be considered when conducting a Memorial Service:

• Choosing a Location - Since you will not have the body present for the Memorial Service, your location options open up drastically. You could consider the family's home or a favourite spot. Many people choose to have a Memorial Service at a local Church or Community Centre. When choosing, try to pick a spot that had special meaning to your loved one.
  
  
• Selecting the Speakers - Try to find a few friends or family members that are good public speakers to deliver a eulogy, read a poem or scripture. Even sharing life stories is acceptable.
  
  
• Consider Your Music Selections - If the venue you select has access to playing music then you should consider taking advantage of that. Music that ties into the life of the deceased, such as their favourite song, can really deliver a message when it is difficult to say any words at all.
  
  
• Create a Slideshow or Tribute Video - If the venue has video capability, then you should consider building a slideshow or tribute video for your loved one. Your video can showcase pictures of your loved one as they grew through life. From childhood, teenage years and making their way through adulthood. We recommend that you choose appropriate songs to go with the video. We also recommend keeping the Slideshow to approximately 10 minutes maximum length.

• Provide Food and Drink - You should consider, if the venue permits, having a caterer provide food and beverages to the guests. Talk with our funeral director for more information on food and drinks options.
  
  
• Creating a Guest List - If the memorial service is taking place many weeks or months later, make sure to invite as many guests as you think would like to come and show their respects. Also, give proper time notification for those that may have to travel to attend.
  
  
• Get Ready with Thank You Cards - When creating a Memorial Service, you are going to need a lot of help in getting things completed and ready for the day. Make sure that you acknowledge those people close to you, for the help they provided you during this difficult time.
