It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Michael John Hunt, at the Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg, Ontario, with his cherished family by his side.
Michael was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty Joan Hunt, whose memory he carried with him always and islovingly remembered by his children, Melissa Hunt Davies(Bill Davies), and Brian Hunt (Louise Cormier). Michael was a proud and devoted grandfather to Taylor, Trent, Catherine, Mathieu, and Nicholas, all of whom brought immense joy and meaning to his life.
The family would like to sincerely thank everyone at Northumberland Hills Hospital who cared for Michael. Your professionalism, dedication and compassion were of immense comfort.
Born on August 19, 1933, in N.W. London, UK, Michael grew up during the Second World War. Following the war Michael and his parents came to Canada in search of new opportunities. His first job was with the Toronto Star newspaper as an office boy and then in the accounting department. Michael loved photography and when someone noticed his talent with a camera he was asked to attend the car races at Sebring and Watkins Glen as a press photographer for the newspaper. So, in 1957 & 58, with a small camera, and press pass in hand Michael captured some fantastic photographs of some of the best drivers and race cars of a generation. The love of photography and cars would continue for the rest of Michael’s life.
When it came to cars, Michael loved MG above all others and in 1955, with his lifelong friend Bill Moffet, he co-founded the MG Car Club of Toronto. In 1957 the model he had seen and loved growing up in England, a cream MGTD would be the first of many MG’s Michael would own. From the very beginning Mike was a fixture at club events and races, camera in hand, capturing decades of memories and sharing the club’s history through his photos and vivid storytelling. We are so happy that he was able to fully participate and enjoy this wonderful club and its members right up until his passing. Michael was extremely proud to be able to pass along his “scrapbook” to the current club President so that the detailed history he gathered can be shared with other MG enthusiasts for years to come. This special club that will be celebrating it’s 70th anniversary in September was truly Michael’s legacy!
Michael had one other passion. As a child he discovered postage stamps and quickly became a collector, Michael wasactively involved in several stamp clubs throughout his life, forming strong and lasting friendships within the great people in the philatelic community. His enthusiasm and appreciation for detail were reflected in the care he gave to each collection and every conversation with fellow enthusiasts.
A committed volunteer, Michael’s work with Big Brothers and the Salvation Army reflected his deep belief in giving back to his community and helping people find direction, confidence, and support. His generosity of spirit left a lasting impact on many lives.
Michael will be remembered for his kindness, curiosity, sense of humor, and the deep love he held for his family, friends, and community.
In accordance with his wishes there will not be a memorial. Michael believed that his big 90th birthday celebration in Cobourg, surrounded by all his family along with cherished friends was his Celebration of Life. In true Michael fashion, his biggest joy that day was visiting so many friends and sharing, photos and souvenirs that document a long and wonderful life lived. A life we were all so fortunate to share with him!
Michael will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him.
Donations in Michael’s name to the Cobourg Salvation Army would be very much appreciated!
